Future Waste Strategies for Hawkesbury City Council and Its Community (2005)

Hawkesbury City Council commissioned C4ES to explore the many facets of the waste disposal industry and then advise Council on what proven opportunities were available to extend, as much as possible, the life of the Hawkesbury City Waste Management Facility, whilst at the same time, delivering a waste management system or technology which provided the best outcome for the community in terms of environmental, economic and social factors.

The project involved research and consultations with industry associations; State Government organisations; environmental organisations; current users of Alternative Waste Technologies (AWT) / Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) technologies; and existing technology providers.

Community consultation included:
  • Media coverage in local newspapers and on the Council website
  • A Public Meeting and Consultation Forum
  • Face-to-face surveys with members of the community
  • A Discussion Paper with associated feedback form

Closing the Loop Community Survey (2004)

C4ES was commissioned by the New South Wales Jurisdictional Recycling Group to conduct a community questionnaire to determine the effectiveness of a trial education campaign that was implemented in Campbelltown and Camden.  The purpose of the campaign was to affirm people's recycling behaviour by helping them understand what new products are made from the materials that they place out for recycling.  Around 350 surveys were conducted.

Environmental Audit of the Australian Sugar Industry (2004)

The Independent Environmental Audit of the Sugar Industry in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, was conducted by C4ES and commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, is now available.

This report focused on the sugar industry in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, including cane growing, harvesting, transport and processing.  The report contained four separate volumes each addressing one of the four Terms of Reference provided by the Australian Government.

The report provided a snapshot  of the industry management practices, made recommendations on industry-wide Code of Practice and Best Management Practice, and reviewed the effectiveness of industry self-assessment tools.

C4ES examined sugar production along the value chain and surveyed growers, harvesters, mills, refineries and other industry stakeholders in sugar cane regions across Australia.  The audit also considered strategies for improved engagement between industry and other stakeholders.

Copies of the Independent Environmental Audit of the Sugar Industry in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia are available from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
